A trained Hittitologist, prof. Kampman founded the NHAI, the Netherlands Historical-Archaeological Institute at Istanbul (now NIT), housed in the Dutch Consulate-General, the “Palais de Hollande”. Later in his career he taught at Istanbul University for some time each year, and his family regularly accompanied him on these trips.
