Introducing: NINO Mobility Grants

The Netherlands Institute for the Near East is starting to award two Outgoing and four Incoming Mobility Grants each year. The first call for applications for both grants is now open!

NINO Incoming Mobility Grant for researchers and students

Twice a year, NINO offers Incoming Mobility Grants of max. € 3000 to graduate students and researchers (any level of seniority) from abroad, who wish to carry out research on the ancient Near East in the Netherlands.

Activities supported by the grant include

• library and collections research at NINO, RMO or other institutions in the Netherlands relevant to the study of the ancient Near East;
• collaboration with a researcher or research team at a Dutch university or museum;
• exploratory meetings geared towards setting up new collaborations in the Netherlands;
• participation at a conference or workshop on the ancient Near East organised in the Netherlands;
• attendance of a masterclass in ancient Near Eastern Studies or specialist course organised in the Netherlands.

Not covered are

• costs for travel to other destinations than the Netherlands;
• entrance tickets;
• tourism;
• food and drink;
• purchase or rent of equipment.

Applicants must hold an MA degree in a relevant field of ancient Near Eastern Studies and be based outside the Netherlands. An Incoming Mobility Grant should be used within 12 months following the award. The Grant cannot be used retroactively, i.e. for trips and visits with a starting date earlier than the award date.

How to apply for a NINO Incoming Mobility Grant

• short CV (max. 2 pages; pdf document);
• travel plan, including proposed budget (max. 2 pages; pdf document);
• motivation letter (1 page; pdf document).

Mention clearly for which amount you are applying (max. € 3000 per application).

Have you obtained or applied for any other funds or awards regarding this trip? Please mention them in your budget – matching funds are an asset to your application.

NINO Outgoing Mobility Grant for students

Four times per year, NINO offers Outgoing Mobility Grants of max. € 1500 to MA, PhD, or early postdoctoral students in the Netherlands. The Mobility Grant is to be used for study or research abroad, such as study visits to museum collections or research institutes, travel to archaeological sites or fieldwork in the Middle East, attendance of masterclasses or specialist courses, or travel to conferences where the student will present a paper or poster.

The Mobility Grant may be used to cover the cost of

• travel and accommodation;
• membership or registration fees;
• admission tickets;
• library fees;
• and similar.

Not supported by this grant are

• tuition fees;
• food and drink;
• purchase or rent of equipment.

Applicants must be enrolled in an MA or PhD program in ancient Near Eastern Studies at a Dutch university, or have recently completed their degree. Outgoing Mobility Grants will not be awarded more than once at each level (MA, PhD, recent post-PhD) and should be used within 12 months following the award.
