Abstract:

Western Asia denotes a vast geographical space between the eastern Mediterranean and the Indus River, including the so-called "Middle" - or "Near East". It was within this region that the first farmers lived, the first real cities were built, and writing was invented. The archaeology of Western Asia is therfore of immense importance, not only as illuminating the history of the modern countries of that region, but as true World history. The lecture will focus on this importance of the field, reflecting on its past, present, and future, as well as provide some examples of its results.
