Initiative to enrich metadata of the Scholten Photographic Collection

NINO and UBL are seeking online volunteers to share their knowledge of 1920s Palestine, enhancing the visibility of the visual history of Palestine.

Do you have knowledge of Palestine and would you like to help to make the visual history of this region more accessible? The Netherlands Institute for the Near East (NINO) and Leiden University Libraries (UBL) are working to improve and augment the digital metadata of the rich and unique photo collection of Frank Scholten (1881-1941), a Dutch photographer who captured all kinds of aspects of daily life in Palestine in the 1920s.

We would greatly appreciate your help and kindly invite you to send us your information before July 1, 2023.

How can you help?

1. Go to the webpage Frank Scholten Photographs in UBL Digital Collections. 
2. Look for photographs which do not yet have any metadata; see if you can identify any buildings, events, places, and/or people in the photos; describe them briefly.
3. Enter your information into a table (in a Word file or Excel sheet) in two columns: one column for the inventory number of the photograph and one column for the metadata you would like to add.
4. Send the document with your results as an attachment to the following email address: frankscholtenphotographs@gmail.com.

The metadata received will be evaluated and reviewed by a group of experts, and (if suitable) added to the online photographs from July 2023 onwards.

مبادرة لإثراء البيانات الوصفية للصور لتسليط الضوء على تاريخ فلسطين البصري

هل لديك خلفية أو معرفة تتعلق بفترة ما قبل 100 عام في تاريخ الشرق الأوسط ، وخاصة فلسطين؟ هل أنت متحمس لإثراء البيانات الوصفية للتصوير الفوتوغرافي القديم؟ وهل تعتقد أنه من المهم المساهمة في إبراز التاريخ البصري لفلسطين؟
يعمل المعهد الهولندي للشرق الأدنى (NINO) ومكتبات جامعة لايدن (UBL) على تحسين البيانات الوصفية الرقمية لمجموعة صور فرانك سخولتن، الذي كان فنانًا من أمستردام، سافر إلى فلسطين في الأعوام 1921-1923.

أصبحت المجموعة جزءًا من مجموعة مكتبة NINO (المعهد الهولندي للشرق الأدنى) في ليدن. يتم الاحتفاظ بالصو ر الأصلية لمجموعة فرانك سخولتن في المجموعات الخاصة بمكتبة جامعة ليدن. كما ان ألبومات الصور والأفلام السلبية والمطبوعات الفوتوغرافية لمجموعة فرانك سخولتن متاحة على الإن ترنت في مجموعات رقمية. تحتوي المجموعة على صور لمختلف الأوساط الدينية والاجتماعية، والمهن، والمهرجانات الدينية، والأحداث، ومشاهد الشوارع، والمعالم الأثرية، والمناظر الطبيعية. تشمل الفترة الزمنية لعمل سخولتن فترة مثيرة للاهتمام حدثت فيها تحولات في الساحة السياسية والديموغرافية، من العهد العثماني إلى المزيد من التأثيرات الغربية.

كيف يمكنك إثراء البيانات الوصفية؟

1. اذهب إلى صفحة الويب Frank Scholten Photographs in UBL Digital Collections.

2. اس تكشف الصور، التي لا تحتوي على أي بيانات وصفية ، إذا تعرفت على أي منها، نتوقع تحديد الموضوعات والأماكن والأشخاص الموجودين في الصور، ووصفها بإيجاز.

3. يمكن وضع النتائج بسهولة في جدول في ملف Word أو ورقة Excel في عمودين: عمود واحد برقم الصورة وعمود واحد فقط لتحديد الموضوع أو الشخص أو المكان إذا كان معروفًا باللغة الإنجليزية او العربية.

4. أرسل لنا النتيجة كملف مرفق بالبريد الإلكتروني frankscholtenphotographs@gmail.com.

سيتم تقييم البيانات الوصفية الواردة ومراجعتها من قبل مجموعة من الخبراء وإعادة تنظيمها لتحديث البيانات الوصفية على الموقع بعد تموز (يوليو) 2023.

Frank Scholten Photographic Collection

The Netherlands Institute for the Near East (NINO) and Leiden University Libraries (UBL) are working on improving the digital accessibility of the Frank Scholten photographic collection. From 1921-1923, Frank Scholten photographed what was then Palestine in an almost encyclopaedic manner. From systematic documentation to portraits, from Biblical landscapes to a loose form of street photography: Scholten captured it in more than 20,000 photos. His photo collection is now regarded as one of the most important visual resources on Palestine.
