Working towards the move to a new building

If you are planning to visit the NINO Library and/or the NINO Research Centre in 2023-2024, please take note.

Leiden University is currently renovating its Humanities Campus. New premises for NINO, the Leiden Institute for Area Studies (including the School of Middle-Eastern Studies, School of Asian Studies, and School of Religious Studies), and other university departments, are planned to be ready in 2024. Read an update on the series of moves to “Cluster Zuid”, our new location, on Leiden University’s website.

From now until June 2024, NINO Library items may be differently or less available than usual. If you are travelling to Leiden to visit our library, please plan accordingly. Expect needing more time than usual to locate publications in our library. Expect to find publications in a different spot than you are used to.

From now until June 2024, the NINO Research Centre is preparing all non-library collections for the move: we are taking measures to ensure that the Böhl Collection and our archive collections (among which the De Buck Archive) can be properly rehoused. Please note that all cuneiform texts and other objects in our Böhl Collection will be unavailable for consultation in January 2024, during final conservation measures, the move to and settling into new premises.

Planned actions/events

In the newly renovated building the NINO Research Centre will have its offices, and the NINO Library will form the Ancient Near Eastern section of Leiden University’s Middle Eastern Library. We are currently preparing for the impending move by renumbering all our library items, and relocating selected items to the University Library’s Open Stack “SUB”. Items selected for placement in the University Library’s Closed Stack “UBGM” have already moved and are available for loan.

We strive to keep the NINO Library accessible and our library items available to users as much as possible.

Large renumbering operation in NINO Library

Starting from 1 May 2023, all NINO Library items will receive a new location code, in accordance with the Library of Congress Classification system used in all Leiden University Libraries. Items are taken off the shelf to a location where they are temporarily unavailable for library users. They receive a new location code, both as a physical label on the item and in the online catalogue. Then they are returned to the NINO library, where they are available to library users, on a different shelf than before.

NINO Research Centre collections

All cuneiform objects in the Böhl Collection have been catalogued, restored, and entered into the Cuneiform Digital Library Initiative. They will be repacked in acid-free cardboard boxes, and moved to Leiden University’s Special Collections. Here they will be available to researchers, who may request to view items through the UBL catalogue. They will continue to be used in Assyriology courses at Leiden University.

NINO’s archive collections, which include the De Buck Archive, the NINO Institutional Archives, the Böhl Papers (complementary to the Böhl archive in UBL), the NINO glass slides collection, and more, will be rehoused. We are currently working on cataloguing these archives and collections, aiming to make them accessible to researchers.

The Scholten Photographic Collection has been catalogued and digitised, and is available in open access through UBL Digital Collections. The collection itself has been stored in the UBL photographic storage facilities since 2007.

The NINO Librarians, the NINO Research Centre staff and offices, as well as our colleagues in the Leiden Institute for Area Studies, will also move to their new premises at Cluster Zuid in Summer 2024.

Werkzaamheden in voorbereiding op de verhuizing naar ons nieuwe gebouw

De Universiteit Leiden is momenteel bezig met de renovatie van de Humanities Campus (voorheen: Witte Singel-Doelen-complex). Op de website van de Universiteit staat een update over de ingebruikname van “Cluster Zuid”, waar ook het NINO zijn nieuwe plek zal vinden.

De voorbereidingen voor onze verhuizing zijn in volle gang en duren tot augustus 2024; houd hier rekening mee als u het NINO bezoekt in 2023-2024.

Tot juni 2024 zijn boeken en tijdschriften in de NINO-bibliotheek mogelijk anders of minder beschikbaar dan u gewend bent. Houd hier rekening mee als u naar Leiden komt om in onze bibliotheek te studeren. Verwacht dat het langer duurt dan u gewend bent om een publicatie te vinden in onze bibliotheek.

Tot juni 2024 bereidt het NINO-onderzoekscentrum alle niet-bibliotheekcollecties voor op de verhuizing: we zorgen ervoor dat de Böhl-collectie en onze archiefcollecties (waaronder het De Buck-archief) intact, veilig en raadpleegbaar naar hun nieuwe onderkomen gaan. Let op: de kleitabletten en andere voorwerpen in de Böhl-collectie zijn in januari 2024 niet beschikbaar voor onderzoek en onderwijs – we zijn dan bezig met de laatste conserveringsronde, het ompakken van de collectie en het verhuizen naar de nieuwe locatie.

Geplande acties en gebeurtenissen

In het gerenoveerde “Cluster Zuid” zal het NINO-onderzoekscentrum kantoorruimte krijgen, en de NINO-bibliotheek zal daar de sectie Oude Nabije Oosten van de Middle Eastern Library vormen. Wij zijn druk bezig met voorbereidingen voor deze verhuizing: alle publicaties in onze bibliotheekcollectie krijgen een nieuwe plaatsingscode, en geselecteerde publicaties worden verplaatst naar het Open Magazijn (SUB) van de Universiteitsbibliotheek. Items geselecteerd voor het Gesloten Magazijn (UBGM) zijn al verplaatst en zijn beschikbaar voor uitlening.

Tijdens deze overgangsperiode houden we de NINO-bibliotheek en onze bibliotheekcollecties zo goed mogelijk toegankelijk voor alle gebruikers.

Grote omnummeractie in de NINO-bibliotheek

Vanaf 1 mei 2023 ontvangen alle items in de NINO-bibliotheek een nieuwe plaatsingscode in het Library of Congress Classification-systeem dat in alle Universitaire Bibliotheken Leiden gebruikt wordt. Dit betekent dat alle banden van hun plaats worden genomen en tijdelijk niet beschikbaar zijn voor bibliotheekgebruikers. Ze krijgen een nieuwe plaatsingscode, zowel een fysiek label op het item zelf als in de online catalogus. Daarna worden ze weer in de NINO-bibliotheek gezet, beschikbaar voor bibliotheekgebruikers, maar wel op een andere plek dan voorheen.

Collecties van het NINO-onderzoekscentrum

Alle kleitabletten in de Böhl-collectie zijn gecatalogiseerd, gerestaureerd en opgenomen in het Cuneiform Digital Library Initiative. Ze worden omgepakt in zuurvrije kartonnen doosjes, en zullen verhuizen naar de Bijzondere Collecties in de Universiteitsbibliotheek. Hier zijn ze weer beschikbaar voor onderzoekers via de UBL-catalogus. Ook worden de kleitabletten nu en in de toekomst gebruikt in colleges Assyriologie van de Universiteit Leiden.

De archiefcollecties van het NINO, waaronder het De Buck-archief, de instituutsarchieven, het Böhl-archief (complementair met het Böhl-archief in UBL), de glasdia-collectie enz. gaan ook verhuizen. We werken momenteel aan het catalogiseren en ompakken van deze archieven en collecties, met het doel ze beschikbaar te maken voor onderzoek.

De fotocollectie van Frank Scholten is gecatalogiseerd en gedigitaliseerd, en is vrij beschikbaar via UBL Digitale Collecties. De collectie is al sinds 2007 opgeslagen in de geklimatiseerde foto-opslag van de Universiteitsbibliotheek.

NINO-medewerkers

De vakreferenten en de medewerkers van het NINO-onderzoekscentrum verhuizen, samen met onze collega’s van het Leiden Institute for Area Studies, naar onze nieuwe locatie in Cluster Zuid in zomer 2024.
