Nesreen Monir received her MA in Coptology from Fayoum University in 2019, with a thesis entitled The Coptic language in Nubia: A Study in linguistic influences. She continued her research in Coptology, and recently completed her PhD at the University of Fayoum with a dissertation on “The formulas of Coptic documentary texts in Nubia: A comparative study”, supervised by Prof. Dr. Maher Eissa.
As a NINO Visiting Research Fellow, she is working on the project under the supervision of Prof. Dr J. van der Vliet (Leiden University). The project focuses on the limited but significant corpus of Coptic ostraca from Nubia, in particular from the Debeira West region (north of Wadi Halfa), which probably date from the eighth century AD. The study aims to compile Coptic ostraca from Nubian sites such as Nagʿ El-Sheima, Faras, and Debeira West, republish selected examples, categorize the texts, and compare them with parallel material from Egypt.
